Chargers Sweep Sauk Valley, Go to 6-0 in Arrowhead

Thanks to some solid pitching and clutch at-bats, the Carl Sandburg College baseball team swept Sauk Valley 7-4 and 2-0 on Saturday to go to 6-0 in the Arrowhead Conference.

Key Moment
Tied at 3 in the fourth inning, Greyson Durbin (Colona, Ill./United Township) brought home the go-ahead run with an RBI bunt single that scored Blake Russell (Joy, Ill./Mercer County) from third. The Chargers went on to add three insurance runs in the sixth.

Sandburg Star of the Game
After allowing three unearned runs in the first, Travis Ausbury (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) didn’t surrender a run over his final four innings of work. He picked up the victory, allowing six hit and two walks while striking out a career-best nine batters in five innings.

Key Moment
Womack drilled a two-run homer to right field in the fourth for the only runs of the game and one of just three Chargers hits in the contest. Coleman came around to score after drawing a walk to lead off the inning.

Sandburg Star of the Game
Left-hander Bryce Meyer (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone) allowed just one hit in six shutout innings to pick up the victory. Meyer opened his outing with a pair of walks and a hit batter, but he escaped the first-inning jam by fanning the next three hitters. The freshman punched out a season-best 10 batters and walked five. His only hit allowed was a single in the third that put runners out the corners with no outs, but he struck out the next two and got a popout to end the threat. Jack Gray (Burlington, Iowa/Notre Dame) pitched a perfect seventh to earn the save and complete the one-hitter.
